Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Georgetown area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
Georgetown was originally settled in 1639 by Reverend Ezekiel Rogers. At that time it was part of the town of Rowley. Several farmers began settling along the Penn Brook and by the mid-1600s they had created Rowley’s West Parish. The village then became known as New Rowley. Small mills and a shoe company opened up in the town. The town continued to grow and by 1838 it was incorporated and renamed Georgetown.
Since 1854, the Erie Fire Association No. 4 Inc. has been owned and operated by its members. A privately-owned, non-profit corporation, Erie 4 serves as one of the Georgetown Fire Department’s two Fire Companies. Although privately-owned fire companies were common in the mid-1800s, most of them have become owned by the taxpayers. The Erie Fire Association No. 4 Inc. is the oldest privately-owned, volunteer fire company in the United States.
Additionally, the shoe industry – the most important industry in the town – was part of a cottage industry in Georgetown for generations. The last shoe factory closed around 1970. However, at one point in its history, the town probably had more shoe manufacturers than any other town in the U.S. with a similar population.
Georgetown served as the filming location for the movie “The Women” (2008). The movie starred numerous Hollywood leading ladies, including Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Candice Bergen, Bette Midler, and Debra Messing.
The Brocklebank Museum on East Main St. is open every Sunday from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. from June 23 through Columbus Day weekend in October. The Brocklebank-Nelson-Beecher house is a First Period structure believed to have been built in the late 1600s. The museum contains hundreds of items from Georgetown’s past including the original railroad depot sign and china used in the famous old Baldpate Inn.
The 1,112-acre Georgetown-Rowley State Forest, managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, offers trails for hiking, walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Wheeler Brook Farm on Jewett St. offers a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including pick-your-own.
