Smoke in Newton Basement

A smoke alarm from the basement of a home in Newton was received. Our Central Station operator reached the homeowner by phone, who indicated she thought it was a false alarm. Two minutes later, the homeowner called back to report smoke in the basement so our operator dispatched firefighters. Upon follow-up, they reported a mechanical problem with equipment in the basement was causing the smoke. Repairs were initiated.
